What does a Saju reading actually tell you?
What a Korean reader looks at, in the order they look at it.
A Saju reading describes a person in three layers. Personality comes from the day master and the balance of the five elements across the eight characters. Relationships and work come from the ten gods, which name how each character relates to the day master, and from the spouse position in the day pillar. Timing comes from the ten-year luck pillars and the current year's pillar. A good Saju reading states which of these layers each conclusion rests on and does not promise specific events.
Layer one: who you are
The reader starts from the day stem. A wood day master is read differently from a metal day master, and a strong day master differently from a weak one. Strength is judged by season (the month branch), by how many characters support the day master, and by the roots the day stem has in the branches. From there the reader looks at which of the five elements is missing, which is excessive, and which element would balance the chart. Korean readers call that balancing element the useful god (용신), and much of the practical advice in a reading is built around it.
Layer two: how you relate
Each character other than the day master is one of the ten gods (십신): the friend, the rival, the output, the talent, the direct wealth, the indirect wealth, the direct authority, the indirect authority, the direct resource and the indirect resource. Where each god sits in the chart tells the reader about parents, partners, children, money and work. The day branch is the spouse position, so the character sitting there and the gods that clash or combine with it are the core of a compatibility reading.
Layer three: when
The ten-year luck pillars (대운) move through the chart in order. A luck pillar that brings the useful god is read as a supportive decade; a luck pillar that brings the element the chart already has too much of is read as a decade that needs care. Yearly pillars (세운) refine this to the year. Korean readers also mark clashes, combinations and special stars (신살) between the moving pillars and the natal chart.
What a Saju reading cannot tell you
- A reading cannot give a date for a specific event. Saju describes tendencies and periods, not appointments.
- A reading cannot be more precise than the birth time. An uncertain hour means an uncertain hour pillar and a shifted luck-pillar start.
- Two readers from different schools can weigh the same chart differently. The chart is fixed; the interpretation is a tradition, not a measurement.
- A reading is not medical, legal or financial advice. Gapja says so on every screen that touches those subjects.
